Types of press brake dies Ⅱ

Types of press brake dies Ⅱ

Oct 06, 2025

In the age of automation and Industry 4.0, press brakes are becoming increasingly versatile and crucial for a wide range of manufacturing sectors.

At the heart of these machines are the punches and dies, key tools that allow precise and repeatable bends to be made with a variety of materials. In this article we will look at the different types of dies

The dies used in press brakes are indispensable components in the sheet metal bending process. They are designed to make bends of various complexity, taking advantage of the efficiency of the press brake.

There are various models of dies for these machines, each with unique features and functions. They allow for both simple and more complex bends, helping to ensure accurate and high-quality results in sheet metal processing.

Let's see which are the main ones.

Straight punches.

These are bending tools that can solve most non-complex bends and thicknesses. They can have a wide variety of tip angles. The angle of the punch tip can affect the final angle of the fold obtained.

Gooseneck punches.

Gooseneck punches are specially designed with a curved shape that allows precise bends to be made on parts with a 90°+90° shaped profile. Unlike straight punches, these punches usually possess a lower strength that can affect the type of bends, thicknesses and materials that can be machined. The angle of the punch tip can influence the final angle of the obtained fold.

Radius punch inserts.

Radius punch inserts are specially designed to obtain large internal radii in the sheet metal during the bending process. These inserts are available in a variety of sizes and can be customized to fit the specific bending needs required.

V-shaped dies.

V-shaped dies represent the most common type of die used in press brakes. Their main purpose is to create linear bends on sheet metal. These dies get their name from the "V" shape of their recess, which is designed specifically for this function. V-shaped dies come in various angles, and the angle chosen will determine the final bend angle.

U-shaped dies.

U-shaped dies are used to obtain bends with large inner radii or very acute angles, which are especially necessary for forming cylindrical or spherical shapes. These dies can be with increased hollow edge radii, which aids the bending process and prevents the sheet from getting stuck inside the die.

Multi-V dies.

Multi-V dies are specially designed dies with multiple slots and different angles, which offers a high degree of flexibility and precision in the process of creating complex bends and parts. Due to their versatility, these dies adapt to different shapes and configurations, allowing for more detailed and quality work.

Z-inserts.

These are tools designed to create Z-bends in a single stroke.

These bending tools are recommended for offset bends, and are most suitable for materials with thin thicknesses (maximum value 3 mm) Usually, they are used to create offset bends (or Z-bends) on panels or other structural elements, where it is necessary to increase the strength of the sheet metal or allow precise assembly with other components. These dies are specially designed to ensure an accurate and reliable result in such special circumstances.

Dies for hemming.

Hemming dies are specially designed to make flattened bends, also called hems, on sheet metal. These dies are widely used in the automotive industry to create seams and joints in body panels. By taking advantage of these dies, a precise and durable finish can be achieved, which is ideal for automotive applications that require a strong seal and durable structure.

Rod bending tools.

Their function is to bend rods of various diameters up to a maximum of 16 mm. This is a tool that needs to be strong enough to succeed in making the bend, but at the same time pliable enough not to create scratches or dents on the rod. They can make bends at various angles and radii, depending on the function the final product is to have (handles, brackets...).

How to choose the right punch and die?

We have seen that there are different types of punches and dies for press brakes, each of which is different in functions and characteristics.

The choice then depends on the needs of the press brake operator and the desired feature of the final product. For example, I can choose one punch or die rather than another depending on:

the desired angle and internal bend radius;

the thickness of the material;

the requirements that the finished piece must meet.

Choosing the right punch and die make the difference on the final result.
